And she's turned into a human! Kind of. Certain merfolk (called Atargati, collectively, in the comic) are born with the ability to use magic and of those there are a select few that have the ability to change into more humanoid forms with legs and stuff. It's less like Ariel's transformation where there's just some flashy lights and POP she's got legs, the transformation in Xeno is kind of different.
It affects their internal structure in such a way that their bones reform and muscles and organs move around to accommodate being on land. So their tail splits into legs, they lose the fins on their wrists, their spine realigns itself for moving the lower half of their body back and forth instead of side to side (like fish), their gills seal up and their lungs adjust to taking oxygen direct from the air, their eyes and ears adjust to hearing things outside of water, and it's all really, really painful. So it's equal parts magic and science, I like to think.
You'll also notice that merfolk in Xeno will look a great deal more fishy than most depictions of mermaids. That's because it just makes sense to me that something that spends the majority, if not all, of it's time underwater would resemble fish more than humans? My merfolk aren't human on top, fish on bottom, they're just really humanoid looking, sentient, intelligent creatures that spend most or all of their lives in water with other aquatic creatures. That's just my thoughts on it, don't think that it's The One True Way to Depict Merfolk. It's not. That's just how I do it.
I'm not sure if I'll ever explain who Eine is in the comic, so I'll give a quick blurb here: Eine is the mother goddess/guardian of all Atargati in all waters of the planet. I would like to explore all the different religions of each species on the planet (or at least all the ones I've been working on in bits and pieces) at some point, but I don't think I'd be really able to do that without dragging out the plot. It's be super interesting to read about, I think, but it doesn't seem like it'd have any place in the main story line to me.
Wow, I didn't mean to turn this into a sermon about my reasons for making Xeno merfolk the way I do, sorry.

See you Monday~!

Beautiful page! I love the expression in the first panel, it really shows her pain, and wow, all that cracking and popping ;3;*

But yeah, gosh, the skin is so pretty!!! <3333 And the magical effects are amazing ;3;* <333

... and wow she's got really pretty legs XDDD

Anyway, all that aside... really curious to know what she's up to and getting to know this lovely girl :D <3

Heehee, thanks Rufi! I'm so glad you like her (I really love drawing the patterns on her skin).

Transformation is always painful.

Yes it is, most of the time you never see the pain though :/

[edit] [delete] [reply]

Not always. Some shapeshifters can turn off their pain receptors while transforming.

... also, it might be less painful if she wouldn't hurry, but she must hurry because she needs to transform the lungs before she suffocates.

Yeah, but everyone goes about it differently I guess. And I'm sure that if the transformation was something of a regular thing the person would build up a tolerance to that kind of pain after a while.

Ok, we're all good. I was worried for a bit that she wasn't the kind of mermaid who could change her tail into legs. Then she would have to be carted around in a bathtub or something all comic long. That would probably get annoying to draw.

Lucky for us she's one of the few that can transform from fish to humanoid! It'd be funny to see Lilith pushing around a giant fish bowl on wheels though.

Not fair? Man, she should know better than to say that around a "Fullmetal Alchemist" fan. Now I'll never shut up about "equivalent exchange".

Hehe. I was just going to comment about how painful her transformation looked, but she beat me to the punch. ;P

Have you ever heard of Tokyo Mew Mew? It's a magical girl anime/manga. In it, Lettuce (yes, that's her name) transforms into a mermaid. It's really cool! :D:D:D

Yeah, I have. It's one of my favorite mangas from my childhood ^_^ Lettuce was one of my favorites, next to Mint and Pudding <3

Mammal on top, fish on bottom sounds like big problems. I always though that the more human looking merfolk are actually related to cetaceans instead of true fish. Of course that doesn't explain the scales ...

I never thought about it like that (though it makes my cetacean inspired merfolk seem a bit weird now that thought's been brought to my attention).

It does make the scales seem a bit fishy though, if they're more related to cetaceans than actual fish...

I like her better than the other one. No offense. Her colors lets just say every thing about her is like the perfect character.

The one with really long hair, purple hair. Like my sister, the four foot hair thing not the purple part.

Something about bones and entire muscle systems shifting about, I'd imagine. It gives you wicked cramps.

I'm imagining a young merfolk transforming for the first time and freaking out because they didn't think it hurt *that* much.
